For DOT employees

If you've had a positive test, refusal, or other DOT violation, you must complete the SAP return-to-duty process before returning to safety-sensitive duties.

The 5-step return-to-duty process

  1. 1

    Initial face-to-face evaluation

Your SAP conducts a clinical assessment and determines what level of education or treatment you need.

  2. 2

    Education or treatment

Complete the recommended program with a qualified provider.

  3. 3

    Follow-up evaluation

Your SAP confirms you've successfully completed the recommendation.

  4. 4

    Return-to-duty test

Your employer arranges a directly observed test before reinstatement.

  5. 5

    Follow-up testing plan

A minimum of 6 unannounced tests in the first 12 months — for up to 5 years.
